My Grandfather preserved these years ago, and I was wondering if there is anything I can use them for for bowhunting.

Any ideas?

I can think of a couple times hunting under oak trees on a windy day where one of those would have come in handy as a helmet :knothead:

My grandpa made slate calls for turkeys out of them.

I've seen hip quivers made from them.

You can stitch suede in the openings and at the front make a tube of suede with a draw string.
And attach a shoulder strap or neck strap.
Would be kinda like a medicine bag to carry things like spare string and small impliments.

The little one at the top is a box turtle. I have seen turkey slate calls made from them.
I have a possibles bag made from a large shell. A good friend made it for me.[attachment=1]
Those shells are beautifully preserved.

How cool are they!
Those turtle shells look really neat Terry.

We'd get hung, drawn, quartered, shot and blown up if caught with turtle shells over here. Prohibited wildlife products I believe they would be called.

Very interesting Possibles bag there wood carver 2, nice.

Would like to see the Turkey call made from the shell too.

Good hunting to you all.

I saw a cool hip quiver made out of a snapping turtle shell once.  Ive got some shells from buddies that noodle for them. Id like to put together a hip quiver made out of one.

Silent footed

I mean, the first thing that comes to my mind is cutting into one of them and making an awesome custom bow quiver with the shell as the broadhead cover. That would sure beat the plastic or leather quivers, no?

Terry Green

Yep...I thought of that right off on the smaller terrrapin.

Pretty good ideas, nice shells.

I have a buddy who also makes turkey calls out of them mounting different chert and jasper slabs to the bottom of the shells. He also carves a turtle head on one end of the striker and stores it where the turtles head would normally be.

They look great just the way they are, nature hard to improve upon, that said I do like what the guys above have done....

I made a slate call for my pops. I ordered the slate from a supply website along with a striker. Works well.
