Here's the other aesthetic consequence of flipping that lam.  The spliced joints are supposed to orient in opposite directions belly to back on the bow.  Now they don't.

Not the best pic, but you see what I mean.

Actually, it's probably a good thing this happened. The splice I made is pretty wide.  Takes up a lot of real estate on the limb.  I may not have been able to narrow the limbs enough without cutting into it.

I've decided to finish the bow (eventually) and pass it along to someone who could use it in spite of it's cosmetic flaws.

I hate making mistakes and wasting materials, but sometimes, it can be an investment in my own education.

At least, that's what I tell myself....     ;)

My figurin's are that if you don't learn something new everyday, you are doing it wrong.
Skeater who?

Sorry to see that mistake! But that was looking like an awesome bow!

Dang, I hate that, sweet bow anyway! It wouldn't worry me, unique that way!

I write on mine too, except I write " belly out" or "back out "  on the tip end at edge where it grinds off for taper.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Heck some camo paint would fix that right up...

monterey

Yup, camo paint fixes anything!

I had part of a newspaper article under clear once.  I gave it away but it ended up coming apart on the ramp probably because I stained the lams with an oil based stain!

I can't say what he writes, it always looks like an intoxicated chicken scribbled on it...   :)

I got a start tonight. I picked out a narrow long stave of Osage with very tight rings. It's also a dark orange instead of a bright yellow, so I'm hoping it'll be a bit more dense and allow me to hit the weight I'm after. After I cleaned up the edges and clipped the ends to see what I have to work with. The stave ended up 72" long, and 7/8" wide. It only has 2 rings of sapwood that are clean. So I'm going to leave a sapwood back. I'm hoping to get it to pull into the mid 50# range. But will be content if I can convince it to pull 45#. I'm confident I can hit into the 50# range since o had a similar stave I got a 90# at 30" draw from that is only 1.125" wide.

Well,
I finally decided on what I'm doing. When I first started into traditional shooting, I knew nothing about it nor did I know anyone who shot so I was on my own. While searching the good ol web for traditional archery information, I came a across a website called Shaffer silvertip bows. On their home page was a bow I instantly fell in love with. It was a 3 pc recurve with a shedua riser and flat grain zebrawood limbs. So, I decided, why not build this bow for this bow swap. I'll be doing a 58" take down recurve with a shedua riser with zebrawood accent stripe and flat grain zebrawood limbs. So, as soon as the shedua gets here, i'll be in business. Looking forward to seeing how this bow comes together.

C. Johnson here is another option.  I once built a bow with zebrawood veneers and the glass was horrible, full of streaks.  I sanded the glass just like I was going to spray finish on it but, sprayed it with brown paint instead.  I then put finish over the paint, that was several years ago and it still looks good.  I only wish I would have used some other color than brown.  I could have gone with some of the colors used in the past.

Kenny, do you care to identify the white-ish "packing material" in the middle?  It's about to be part of my riser....

Life is too short to use marginal bow wood

I always hope folks can get some use out of the packing
