This is the fourth year that I take part in the bow swap and I'm totally amazed about the quality of the work here on Trad Gang. Awesome bows, you guys are building and I would be happy with every bow I have seen so far.

Wow guys you are all on fire... Got my pieces laid out and ready to start tomorrow!!!

My biggest hold back will be when it comes to the spray finish. I do all my spray work in my garage and with the weather we have been having it may be awhile before I get to spray on the final finish.

Troy, do you use smooth-on your finish?

goobersan,

I seal the pores of the wood using one of the longer set time (30-45 minute) two part epoxys. Like the ones that come from the local hardware store.

I cut the epoxy with acetone. Four parts acetone to one part epoxy. Most refer to it as the Massey Finish.

I apply a coat with a clean rag (old Tee shirts). The let it dry over night. If I can get to another coat in 8-12 hours I do so. If not I lightly sand with 320-400 grit paper (not emery cloth), wipe clean and then apply another coat.

It take several coats to fill the pores in some woods. Once you have the pores full, your spray finish will look smooth as glass. My final spray finish is Fullerplast.

To me there is nothing less appealing to me than to look at a nice bow with great wood combos, excellent craftsmanship and see unfilled pores in the finish. To me it's like rebuilding a 66 Mustang and painting it with a brush.

Forgot to add, I tried smooth-on (one time) to makeup some of the Massey Finish. Bad move, it took almost three days for it to dry. Guess the acetone did something to slow the cure time.

Amazing work going on, sure are a bunch of very talented craftstmen on this site.

Trying to get mine all gussied up before taking pics.  I've put at least 400 plus arrows through it so far, so I guess it's broke in.

Killer bow Troy, wow my eyes are popping out of my head at the quality this year...keep them coming.

Troy, You take your time.  I'm a patient person and deer season is several months away!
Your bow looks great already.

Goose Gossett

So I have it drawn to the recipients draw length and it's 10lbs too light.  It shoots to my standards but my favorite is the grip finder on the front.  I have a couple of inches I could chop off but I'll start with flipping the tips a bit and see where that gets me.

Troy thanks for the tip on the grain filling.  That bow is gorgous.

Its unreal how good the work you all are doing this year.  Great looking stuff.  High fives to everybody..lol

If its mine the lighter weight is fine(;-)

Goose I would settle for 10 to light if you put that purty skin on it.   :bigsmyl:

goobersan

Goose, I'll settle for less weight and no skins   :goldtooth:
