HH bug got me ... Part One!

That may be something I am seeing, but I just don't have enough experiences with these type bows to know what I'm missing or experiencing."
It's a "feeling" issue for me. Much like if you were to hit a baseball with a hollow thin wall pipe (bamboo) you can feel the vibration in your hands and it keeps buzzing but if you hit that same ball with a solid dowel rod or baseball bat it's just a good solid thump. I know people say they cannot feel the difference in core woods but I can.
I don't know if it's the physical make up of bamboo or what but I know what I feel. It just seems more solid to me. Just like the pipe anology, the EMT is quicker in the hand (boo) but the bat just seems more balanced and powerful. Again this is all my personal opinion but I feel it in all the bows I have tried and I have yet to shoot a boo cored bow that I truly loved, there was always that "something" that never sealed the deal, now the elm , maple and action wood cored Bows seems to have the solid feel I like.

The difference between these 2 bows is definitely discernible, but now I'm questioning whether its the core woods or the string follow.

With that said, I truly, truly enjoy shooting both of these bows.

Have to say, also, these bows just hit where I'm looking.

I think I'm sliding down a slippery slope!

I'll agree on the difference in feel between the 2 bows, but I'm in a similar situation. I've had 2 Classics, both Boo, still got 1. And 2 Sheltons, both Elm, still have 1. So I'm not sure if its the SF or the Boo VS Elm.

The Shelton you have now was mine not too long ago, sold it to Shinken a little while back. Grip was too small for me, loved the bow otherwise. It was a stock bow Steve had on the rack at the GLLI.

Next month I'll have a Classic with Elm limbs so maybe I'll get the answer to this question.

FWIW..Steve dont use red elm, its just regular old american elm he cuts off his family property.

I had a Hill take-down Cheetah once upon a time which I foolishly sold a couple years ago and would now love to have back. I recently picked up another Hill longbow and put the recurve up for sale. Its a 66" Big Five and it reminded me of how much I like these bows. I'm wanting to place an order for another bow at lighter poundage (mid 50's) to use for 3D primarily. I think I've narrowed it down to either a take-down Hill Wesley Special, a JD Berry Misty Dawn, or a Miller Old Tom. I just can't seem to decide which way to go. I want to try a string follow bow and I'm trying to decide if I want to wait the longer wait time for a Miller or go with one of the others with a shorter wait time, or try to pick up another used bow for immediate relief of this itch. Reading through this thread has reignited that itch.

Got a question guys...

What are the pros vs. cons of tip overlays and power wedges?

Are they used only in certain circumstances?

My understanding on overlays is aesthetics and to make a bow FF capatable. The wedges are to make it FF capatable. Again just my understanding. I prefer my American longbows without overlays but I just like the look without them. I have wedges in all 3 of my Berry bows

I am now a convert. I recently traded for a Big Five and although it took some getting used to, I am very impressed how smooth they shoot. I've still got alot of work to do, but I'm gonna try to draw first blood this year. Looking forward to it.

Brian if you like elm you would love a laminated yew bow. Plenty of power with just the right amount of thump

Hi gang! I just got back from a long camping weekend chasing the elusive Eastern turkey with my Wesley Special on public ground.

I was hoping for luck near Howard Road!

I flushed a Tom at about 15 yards but I did not get a shot. My head was down looking for more of these!

Never got the opportunity to drop the string on a turkey but had a great time trying!

If it is in the car to the range, just a suede bow sock.
I bought a hard plastic longbow case which is for two longbows and is adjustable, from Black Widow. The price seemed more than fair. I have yet to use it, but I was thinking about using it for air travel.
