I'm with Ben... My 64" Wesley @ my 28" draw yields better results than my 68" @ 28" draw Black Bear   :knothead:   .   I alternate between both bows and group well... But the Wesley I got from Grapes (Mike Vines) is a killer!   :archer2:

A friend of mine showed me in old magazines/journals that you rarely heard of longbow under 68" or 70", unless they were shot by women. Even then they were long. The recurve options and more treestand hunting encouraged to going shorter and then eventually R/D showed up. Oh yeah, and most were shooting 70# + too!

Beautiful bow Rob!

Rob....... lemme ask you something.... I suppose we all "feel" things differently or we'd all like the same bow, BUT

I've not had but a few bows as direct comparisons, but all things being equal, I think a 3 lam bow has a smoother draw then say a 5 lam bow of the same make/length/poundage..... especially in narrow limb deep core longbows. Just my experience.

Any thoughts?

32 1/2 in that picture i was in the tunning process then. But they are now cut down to 30" 290 gr tip. And with 2117 footing at  1 1/4 inches long.Total arrow weight of 602gr.

yes, i completely agree - that's why i have a pair of tembo's when i could have, have had, a buncha wesley's and big 5's.

plagiarism and flattery will get you everywhere.  :D

as just mentioned in a post above, i also believe than fewer boo lams make for a smoother longbow on the draw, the hold and the release.

I think the idea is that the extra lams don't really start to come into their own until the weight becomes a factor.  For the guys ordering 70# and up from Hill, the extra lam probably does feel a bit smoother.   There's a point at which the extra lam and the extra glue line are kind of a wash.   My building, pitiful though it might be, seems to bear this out.  I build a series of 1, 2, 3 and 4 lam bows for comparison.   Came to the conclusion that at my low weights, I could probably build everything with 2 lams, but I generally use three "just because" or to get a color contrast lam in the middle (very scientific here).  If I'm aiming for 45 or more, I got to four.

Hmmm, that is interesting Dick. I like my wesley, but as you say, after that bow I never really thought about the number of lams and my hill and hill style bows range from 3-5 lams, and there really isn't a difference in how they shoot if you compare equal lengths. They are from 45-53#. My first cusom Hill bow just happened to be a wesley. I have shot and owned big 5, wesley, cheetah, redman bows of sorts. Still have several. I would like to try a tembo and see if there is a difference though.

Rob DiStefano

the number of lams used will dictate the amount of glue used (glue adds limb weight and perhaps other factors such as coefficients of elasticity and compression).  multi-lam lams (actionboo, lamboo) add even more glue lines.  then there is lam thickness and taper.

the new craig-built tembo i just received has three lams of added heat tempered boo (aka "caramelized").  the lams are thick and the limbs are narrow and deep cored.  this is by far the smoothest pulling, holding and shooting hill longbow i've owned or shot to date.  and i've owned and shot more than all my digits added together.   :)    part of this wonderfulness, i think, is due to the 70" length, the fewer lams, the added boo heat tempering, and the string follow limb set ... and craig's longbow building knowledge and craftsmanship.

GMASIUK

I have one very similar to Rob's on order due in soon. Mine will have a little different spin to it though.

Raging Water

Just wanted to show a picture of my Half Breed and the Pretty Pink arrow that Jason Ekin made for my bow. They are perfectly spined for my bow and hit just right where I aim. (Too bad my aim is so bad)
