I'm going to have a week next month in Frisco, and I would like to get in some scouting.  It looks like there are plenty of likely spots to investigate.  Do you need any permits for back country camping?  Are there any restrictions or regulations that I should know about?

Ham -- lucky dog! Tiny little Frisco is home to an inordinate number of great micro-brew pubs with no shortage of friendly folks. Fly fishing is great on the nearby Arkansas River ... but scouting for hunting, I just don't know. Even though hunting drives my life in many or most ways, I do try to save space to enjoy great places and experiences without it. Only way you won't enjoy yourself there is if you're a teetotaler or longhair hater. It's the Rockies! dave

Quite a bit of National Forest land north of there along Hwy. 9. No restrictions that I know of on camping in the NF, but there may be a fire ban in effect, we're having some pretty good forest fires already this year. If your wife is coming with you, there are a bunch of factory outlet stores in Silverthorne, just minute away. Bring your wallet!

I hunted cow elk there a few years ago in a late rifle cow season. It is sometimes difficult to find access along Hwy 9 to public land, since there is mostly private right along the road. But if you get a chance to ask a sheriff or find a game warden, they will be happy to show you where public access is. It is really purty there now. Scattershot gives good advice on the fire danger. Even with a good spring, this is already a big year for fires, although the worst so far has been much farther west.
