Has anybody read G.Fred's book on ground hunting? I plan to get this book just wandering about it . I'm new to trad hunting. I bought my first recurve this past Jan a 70's Bob Lee 52in red wing hunter and have fell in love with the trad way! I hunted for years with compound and just got kinda bored with it and my 3 hunting partners and great friends are all traditional to the bone we have great time hunting together.

Welcome to the light side...literally...trad bows sure are a lot lighter to tote around to woods.

Daniel, Both of G.Fred's books are excellant. His "Instinctive Shooting" is where I learned to shoot instinctive. I read his ground hunting book before my Colorado elk hunt last year and it was full of helpful information. I would recommend both books.   Pat

Just got back from Tannehill a little while ago Daniel. I found a new Rancho Safari ultra light ghilli suit on the auction site for $70. I am going to try it out this season when I am ground hunting.

Asbells book is a fine read with lots to learn!... Hunting from the ground is fun...The only time you will find me in a tree stand is when I hunt over a bait drum for bears...    ...

Good Luck!!!

Is that better my friend?... ;) ... :p ...

Daniel, right after G.Fred wrote that book he went on tour.  He came to the archery store I worked at in Grandville MI.  complete with a bag of dry leaves to show us how to put our foot down so that our steps would sound like a deer walking in the leaves.  Of course, here in Michigan the deer are nervous as long tailed cats in a room full of rockers and do not put up with much walking around.  But the whole thing got me thinking and I actually tried to sneak up on deer and sneak in the woods.  I was amazed! All the animals in the woods calmed down.  For the first time I had small game, birds and deer in very close range while I was on the ground.  It aint easy but it can be done.  Fred is an icon no doubt.

I really enjoyed the book too.  I am still practicing the deer walk, but found that if I reverse the heel-toe to a toe-heel, I can stay on balance better for my next step.  I definitely need to re-read that section though.

Mark, when he showed you how to deer walk, did you pick up anything from his demo that wasn't really clear in the book?  Thanks.
