Another carbon arrow ?

Another carbon arrow question from a strictly wood arrow guy. My neighbor has started shooting carbons out of his BBO. They fly like darts but he is pretty rough on them. After several of them have impacted rocks and other hard objects they have a split about 1" long near the insert. Can these splits be glued and repaired or should the shafts be trashed?

You can glue a piece of aluminum shaft over that area before or after...they'll be fine.  

What type of arrows?

I don't need to tell you, but flexing hte shaft after an errant impact is a good idea.

Eric, first is using the right glue for inserts. I have had very good luck with the Bohning Powerbond product with shaft damage due to insert pushed into it dropping to a rarity. I know some others have done well with glue specifically for graphite golf shafts.

As far as repair, sinew works great! Pull the insert if you can and wrap it tightly, reglue the insert in. I know Charlie Lamb has a couple resurrected like this that are still going strong...maybe stronger than before.

Other guys have gone so far as footing with an aluminum shaft over the carbon. I've not done this myself, but hear it makes the carbon shaft almost truly indestructible.

I know 2020's (and simialr) go over the Beman/Axis skinny shafts, not sure about the GT's...might take a 21XX or 22XX...there was a thread recently that detailed who was using what over which...I'll dig.

Basically, though...if it slides in snug or with a small amount of wiggle room, the epoxy will take care of the rest.

I think it is risky to mess with carbon shafts that have been damaged.  

We have all seen the pictures of  guys with broken carbon shafts in thier bow hands.

Why take a chance?

I would vote to get rid of them or use them for tomato stakes.

Seems to me that I used a 2117 to foot some of mine, works like a champ. Glue enough on to cover the split and they should be almost indestructable.
