May have a chance to go to Wy for Elk in 08. Anyone ever hunted that elk season?

I plan to buy the preference point this summer to increase my odds. Any other pointers?

It's phenomenal on the ranch I didn't draw a tag for this year.

It really varies a lot depending on many factors such as umber of tags, proximity to wolves, private vs public land available, and on and on.

Do you pick what areas you want to apply for or is it random?

Guided or on your own would be my first question.

Guided on privite ranch is almost always great. Lots of animals controled access good chance at seeing quality animals.

On your own.
If you want to see a lot of animals but not very many big bulls go to the south central like the Sierra Madres (part of the Medicine Bow National Forest). There are a lot of roads and a lot of hunters for WY but there are a lot of elk.

If you want a chance at a big bull and the full back country experience I would go west of Pinedale or western WY. Fewer elk but more quality animals.

In the archery season any sex is legal which is nice.

RAZOR,
first thing to do is decide what you want? have you hunted elk anywhere before?if so do you want a bigger one? or what kind of hunt do you want? forest hunt, or maybe a wilderness hunt? and how iimportant is filling you tag?
and last decide what you want to spend for tag, there are 2 types of nonresident tags.
1. regular elk
2. special elk
the only diffrance is $, and sometimes your draw % goes up.
now with wyomings preferance (sp) point system, things have changed. so even if you want to hunt in 08, you may not get a tag! so do think about why and when and how much $ you want to spend.
then p.m. i could help you on area's
 good luck

I guess the point money is non-refundable? A friend of mine has been bow hunting Elk for many years and he has invited me to come along. I know very little about calling. I believe he packs in on DIY hunts. I'll have to find out where he plans on going and get back to you guys. Thanks for the info so far.

I don't need a P&Y bull but a nice one for the wall would be cool. Just getting to go, seeing the country and being afield with my bow would be enough. Taking a bull Elk would be the icing on the cake.

Go online and READ about the areas. You want to be VERY careful when applying for the Special Tags...Look at species and dates of hunts also areas, some of the areas are split areas and special tags are good only on private prop. with  foot access only. Look that tag over very well before applying.

THAT is the kind of info I need, THANK YOU!
