I'm getting closer to ordering my first custom, and thinking about either ebony/spalted maple flare, or Cocobolo/spalted maple flare. My question is, is spalted maple going to be solid enough to hold up to a #55 3 pc.? From what I know, the black streaks in spalted maple come from a fungus that gets into the wood. It makes some beautiful furniture but will it take the stress a bow puts on it?

I don't know how much strain it can take. My only experience with it is in bowl turning. It basically is an early stage of decomposition. Turning it into a bowl is a crap shoot. Sometimes it's kind of punky and is too soft to even sand well. I would personally stay away from it in any structural application.

I think revive our homes just had one break ,might ask him. Can't remember if it was curly or spalted........
Stay sharp, Kenny.

This stuff looks awesome . I've seen this used on pistol grips and think it would look great on a bow if it will work .

I think it gets stabilized with resin. I love mine.

Knock it off KILLIE! Don't make me sneak over there and snatch that bow  :bigsmyl:  . Like Killie said has to be  stabilized. I got some great spalted redoak from 4runr. Just did another knife handle with it. Looks kinda like maple also. If I get a chance I'll post it. I would love a riser with this red oak in it.<><

now I remember where I saw one Killie! do you know if Bob "stabilized" it, or did he buy it that way? also, what is the other wood in that bow?

Killdeer

He likely bought it stabilized, but if you ask him, he'll tell you. The other wood is macassar ebony, one of my favorites!
