Gasket Lacquer over Poly or Spar All the Way

I am looking for opinions (that is dangerous) and hopefully some input from guys who have actually tried this. I have read most of the gasket lacquer posts on this board, but I would still like some direct feedback on this.

I have read where guys have stained, then applied poly for sealing, and then finishing up with gasket lacquer for target burn and the smooth finish.

I have also read where people use spar urethane with the gasket system with great results. Some say that target burn with this finish is at the same resistance level as the GL. Is this true?

So, since GL is not a water proof sealer and will crack when placed directly on the shaft and exposed to moisture, would it still crack if it is placed on the poly finish and is exposed to moisture?

Or, should I just use spar urethane and dip it with the gasket system eliminating any chance of the cracking, and peeling that has happened with GL?

Thanks!!

I use Minwax Poly on all of my Arrows, 2 or 3 Coats, depends on the weight, etc. Then a Good Coat of Good Old Turtle Wax to make 'em slicker than Owl Snot!  :scared:
I havent had any Target Removal Issues, so far.  :goldtooth:

I don't think it is a danger issue gasket lacquer may not be compatible going over any thing but another lacquer finish. But poly can go over lacquer or most other finishes. When I use gasket lacquer that was all I used to finish arrows. But  I would use poly over other finishes. For target burn I made up a small tube with foam in it,spray the foam with some armour all and stick the arrow in it.That would make the last 4-5" of the arrow very slick with no target burn.

Good Idea for "Target-Burn" JRY309!!      :archer:

PAM works great, spray the last 10"s of the arrow and they pull out fine. Shawn

Those are some good ideas. About how many shots until you guys have to re-coat the front of your arrows with PAM or Armour All?

To answer you initial question. GL won't crack if you put 2 or less thin coats over poly, spar or epoxy acetone. I like epoxy acetone the best under GL although it does take several days to build up 5 or 6 coats of EA on a shaft.

I once used soap or armor all on poly coated arrows to prevent target burn but it had to be reapplied ever few shots and was a pain so I turned to GL instead.
