Blunts

I have not shot anything with blunts ive killed some squirrels with Judos and I know they kill great. But will a blunt kill a squirrel or rabbit if they are hit in the body? Do they even penetrate? Could someone tell me how they perform?

What are we talking, rubber blunt or the more simple steel/brass blunts, both work well and both do significant damage on rabbits. That said, you'd be better off with judos or a blunt with a cutting edge on squirrels. They're just tough little buggers...

It is possible to penetrate a squirrel with a blunt, but not likely. Sqirrels can take a big hit. They will also take an arrow into a tree.  Rabbits can be kind of wimpy. Either way, go for the head shot. I like the .38 shell blunt. mine are about 200 gr.

I hunt with Judos for ground shots because out of my compound they ripped some squirrels open but for a tree shot I know a Judo sticks in to trees and I dont want to shimmy up a tree to recover an arrow so id choose a rubber blunt. If a squirrel is on the side of a tree and gets hit in the body with a blunt can I expect them to drop or do they try their hardest to stay on?

I like judo's or ace blunts, i have used rubber blunts but for stumping, squirrels are pretty tough critters. If your gonna take those high up shots sooner or later you'll have to shimmy up to get an arrow

Ace Hex-Head blunts have worked better for me than regular steel blunts, rubber blunts, or judo points.  Almost as hard to loose and do a better job of killing.  If you are good enough to make a head shot every time, any point will work fine.

Dunno about NY rabbits, but MS rabbits are tough--I won't hunt them with a judo or regular blunt--too many lost.

any kind of blunt is  devastating to smaller game. (that is; if size of critter is in relation to the poundage you're shooting.)

i've shot HTM blunts completely through rabbits and squirrels using a 45-50lb recurve.

LBR is corrwect, NY bunnies are very tough. I always laugh whne peple say rabbits are wimpy, not here. That said i have killed them with Judos, Hex blunts and regular blunts, they all work. Hex Blunts may be the best of those three but are pricey. I killed 5 bunnies this year all with the same arrow and that was with a regular old blunt. The same is true for squirrels, I have never had a blunt bounce off of one either. I would not use rubber blunts on any game except maybe frogs, the hard plastic ones are OK but again would rather use something steel. Shawn

dont no bout bunny's but i have heard other people kill em with blunts. for cottontails i use tiny broad heads but i forget what they are called. but i no they'll do a number on a squirrel thats for sure. i was just saying in another thread how you can make em for cheap out of old 9mm and .38 special cases, just glue em to the end on the shaft.

If I were the size of a rabbit and got hit ANYWHERE with an arrow, twice as long as I am, traveling near 200 fps....I would die! Or at least wish I was dead! lol

louisiana just opened a spring squirrel season and I need to get some arrows fletched up and ready, my dad has a 38 special revolver, we might take a trip to the range and save the brass, heres my question, how do you add more wieght to a shell casing?

I have steel blunts on my flu flus right now dont like them for tree shots I got one in a tree right now 25 ft lol the others did deflect tho.
