I recently aquired a 55", 50# Shakespeare recurve, that is not FF compatible, ( 99% sure)

I would like some advise on what string I should put on it, best material, where to get it, etc.

I know there have been a few threads on strings lately, but I thought this was appropriate.

Thanks as always

Is it actually marked 55"s?  Adding all markings to the thread will help.

Also...make it 100%...it is NOT FF compatible.

Looks like the Wonderbow model...good looking curve.

B-50 or B-500 material is what you want.  I can't help much on the string length.

If it were mine, I'd ask around about brace ht. and find the correct string length with a tillering string.

If it is AMO, it will need an actual string length of 51".

I've been looking for a site I once had that had some details about Shakespeare bows, among others.  I'm not sure if that number is AMO or not...My recolleciton is that it is a late fifties early 60's design and was similar to the Kodiak...it may be a 60" bow requiring a 55" or 56" string length.

Man, I wish I could find that site!

I'll keep looking...

Can you tell what the bow measures full length...using a tape to measure curves and all, not just tip to tip.

As a side note...I've been looking for one of these for some time...I would love a Wonderbow X200...just because

E-mail me you mailing address and I will send you a B-50 string.
Do you have a preference on colours??

Thanks guys - I did measure the bow and it is 55" from nock to nock, so a 51" sting sounds right.  Passthru must have read my mind, as I was hopeing for advise on stirng material, # of strands, flemish, endless loop, etc.

Thanks to all for your help.  Hope you find that website bjk, I would like to take a gander at that.

I won't tell you where I got the bow or how much I paid, it would not be fair...

Definately dacron (B-500 or B-50).  Endless or flemish will work fine, just go with what you prefer.  If it's built to AMO specs, it will get a 52" string, but the majority of old recurves I've seen will get a string 4" shorter (AMO specs are 3" shorter, recurve or longbow).

12-14 strands will be plenty.

A buddy just reminded me...tons of great info here, maybe even some re: your particular bow...

The archery archives link is the place to go.  Click on Shakespeare, find your bow, you'll have your answers.  You may have click on a few different years to find your.  They didn't make all the styles in each year.  I'd go with 14 strands in an endless loop.  Don't know anything about Flemish.
