I was shooting my new recurve, then one shot flew back into the woods behind my house, it was getting dark and I could see just enough to see the fletchings on my arrow, I live in southeast Louisiana, I see a lot of snakes!, but not too many in my yard because we have a big kingsnake that eats all the bad snakes in our yard, when I bent over to pick up the arrow, I saw something bright white open up, then I realized, it was a cottonmouth!(water moccasin), he lunged toward me but I was too far out of his reach, I ran inside as fast as I could and grabbed my 22 and a few bullets, but by the time I got outside, it was too dark to see, so watch where you put your hand when you pick up an arrow!

Ya shoulda whacked him on the head with your arrow. It doesn't take a gun OR a ball bat for that matter to kill a snake.

They are actually pretty frail.

Charlie, they don't make arrows long enough for me to wack a cotton mouth on the head with :>). But I might try bare shafting a hoe handle, just in case I ever go south to hunt. Brokenwing

I usually give cottonmouths a wide berth. The ones around here tend to be fairly foul tempered & quick to come after ya.

One started paying too much attention to my wife last summer when we were fishin' & came within about two feet of the chair she was sitting in before she gave up on it going away. I would have left it alone but it was intent on giving my wife some "attention".

How about a 3 iron? (might not be traditional, but should get the job done)

I was out yesterday checking some feeders. I turned around to walk away from the feeder and stepped on a 4 foot cottonmouth(water moccasin is what we call em here). I jumped like a little girl. Glad there was noone there to see that.

Saw my first snake yesterday here in Ohio. Laying on the road as it was trying to warm up I assume. (Blacksnake)

We only have one type of rattler up this way and they are protected.I,m told they are very passive and have not heard of anyone being bitten recently. Not to say it would'nt happen if I stuck my hand in the wrong place.
If it wasn't for Hillary Blackburn I may have never found my way to the woods and the water.I miss you Puppy.Love from your grandson.

AS long as it's got a wooden shaft it should qualify as traditional!  ;)
