Bow Field Maintenance Kit

Hi All,

I've got a brain picking question.

Let's suppose you have a 4in diameter by 3/4in deep round tin.  (My mom likes lemon drops so I have a million of these things)

In this tin you're going to put all the necessaries you need to keep your bow running in the field.  I know a simple bow requires very little in the way of 'maintenance', but what would you take along if you wanted to cover your bases?

Lastly: this is NOT a survival kit. (that's in a separate tin).  No need for flares, bandaids, snare wire, etc... unless you are going to use them to maintain your bow)

Off hand, I'd include:

extra string (with nock point and silencers on)
stub of stringwax
'single-use' tube of superglue (2 if there's room)
spare sideplate/rest (self-stick calf hair for me-- your favourite for you)
dental floss
brass nock point

If I shot a takedown bow I might add

extra screws
a wrench

and so forth...

What's in your Tin?

(who is looking forward to some great tips!)

Good list so far.  The only thing I would add would be strips of self adhesive velcro. Good for lots of uses but the one I had in mind is fixing the bow quiver should a strap break.

For a day's hunting the only thing I take is an extra string.

For a weekend shoot, I'm more concerned about arrow repair than bow repair. Besides the extra string, I pack extra points, nocks, hot melt, lighter, small folding pocket saw, whiffen taper tool, duco, rubber bands.  I do also have an extra arrow rest and plate.  All this goes into a small plastic compartmented box and is more than enough for a small group of guys I go to shoots with.

Mommy, where does bacon come from??
Well, a pig sweetheart.
Well how does a pig lay bacon??

Daddy, what season is it?
Well, winter season honey.
No! What "hunting" season is it!!

A properly set up, shot in string, a stringer and a small compass, just in case...

Add a feather or two for the arrow repair, although I guess you could pick those up off the ground.

I'm curious how you plan to use the brass nock.  Teeth or rock?

Jake H

Passthru,

Leatherman. (never leave home without it.)

Now that that's out of the way, do you have any useful suggestions?

(who would look silly with a brass nock stuck in his teeth)

A roll of fletch-tape. So much easier to hand-fletch an arrow in the field with it instead of glue...

Hey, if it were me, I'd take an extra string in a ziploc bag and the rest of the tin would be filled with your Mom's lemon drops.

I figure if anything happens that can't be remedied with the extra string, I can always sit at the base of a big tree and eat lemon drops.

LOL,

That might be the most pragmatic idea yet         :campfire:

Kleenex...in case you break your bow.   ;)    :(    :(

For a TD recurve, extra moleskin for the string gooves, extra felt , cork or whatever you use between the limbs. Also some extra riser inserts, 'cause you never know...A bow-gnome or 2 in your pack would be good too...   :archer:
