I stopped in the carpentry shop at work today. The boys had an old 10" circular blade they where fixing to throw out. If any one out there can use it for knife building let me know I'll mail it to you. It"s marked FREUD DIABLO made in ITALY 10" combo mitre / table saw blade

I got some 20" trim saw blades and a 48" cut off saw blade out of a saw mill they are near 5/16" thick so I have plenty of blacksmithing room to "stack the steel. so far they have made very durable and scary sharp  blades.

good saw blades are made from L6, which is a great knife steel.  most common circ saw blades today (the ones with the carbide teeth are made outta crap, low carbon steel and they rely on teh carbides to do the work.   when it doubt, cut a chunk off, heat it up to non-magnetic, and quench it in veggie oil.  if it shatters when you whack it with a hammer, its good hard steel, if the just bends and stays bent.  not worth the trouble.

I make a lot of my knives from old saw blades. A 10" saw blade isn't big enough for the makers to need to use really good steel on and so I wouldn't even bother with it. The real good steel starts to show up when the blades get to 18" across and you are pretty safe if it is 2' or more.

The snap test is a good start, and I do a test blade to check the temper I can get also.

I make all of my knives from old saw blades that I get at various places.  The steel is awesome to work with and easy to make soft/hard again!
