Chekmate Limb Fixture , Will it Split ?

Has anyone heard of a Chekmate Limb splitting from over tightening the limb bolt ?
 They have a counter sunk limb bolt and the instructions say not to overtighten as the limb may split     :eek:  
 I was thinking of maybe buying some normal limb bolts and washers and changing it .

Any td with bolts would be prone to splitting if over tightened....lightly snug up the screws, then a 1/4 turn or so...

Yeah maybe ,, but normal take downs arent countersunk bjk. It is effectively like driving a wedge into a bit of wood .

It is late and maby I'm not thinking right but wouldn't washers apply the same pressure as the countersunk bolts. I am thinking of washers in the countersunk hole.

I am thinking that flat washers on top would be a better setup. All thuogh I am sure that Checkmate has teated their system and if it did not work they would do something else.

I was thinking of washers on TOP as well , not in the countersunk hole .
Maybe their system is tested ,, time will tell .

Leave it alone,most takedowns have a counter sunk or beveled washer with the same type bolts as yours.Why do you want to fix something that has been working for years,Kip

Looks like phenolic overlays to me, that isnt going anywhere! If it is phenolic it will not split.

It is Phenolic , but there is not much contact with the limb bolt . As I said , just a concern

I've had no trouble with my Chek-mate T/D Coachy.
But I be careful not to overtighten the limb bolts.

Only troublesome thing I notice is about every four months or so, it will get a creak, or ticking noise, when you draw the bow. I put a light coat of bowstring wax on the limb bolt head where its tapered and fits into the countersink, and it's quiet as ever.

Chekmate's been making that design for a good bit with no issues that I'm aware of.  I've owned two different hunter II's and never had a problem.  The cranking down on the limb bolts applies to any takedown.  Over tightening the bolts can crush the glass under the bolt leading to a limb split in time.

They've conservatively got several thousand of those bows in hunters hands around the world. I wouldn't worry about it one little bit.

I would get a bushing that would fit into the whole and then put my washer and new bolt on.  The bushing would prevent the sides of the hole from collapsing in in case the bolt was not centered right.

Yep--what Jason said.  Chek-Mate has been at this for around 35 years.  With their prices, they can't afford to have a lot of warranty work, so it's only in their best interest to do it right the first time.  I've never heard of anyone splitting a limb, although I figure it's possible with enough torque.  Don't over-tighten and it will be just fine.  Don't add washers, just use it as it was designed.

Why would ya change it. If ya change it and ya have a problem, Chek-Mate would void their warranty. If ya keep it like it is and have a problem than they will make good on it as long as you do not overtighten them. Like bjk said snug and then a skight quarter turn. Shawn

Fedora has been using that set up forever. Mike would not continue to use something that does not work. Just don't over tighten and enjoy your bow!

the one your posting is for his recurve...this is his 3 piece longbow...same as chek-mate...
