Getting ready .... homemade box call "Pic"

Folks, I'm starting to get ready for the upcoming turkey season... It's been snowing a bunch here the last week or so with over 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours .... So, I spent some time in the shop yesterday and made up a new box call... and took a photo of it with some of my other gear.....

Anyone else getting ready? I start bowhunting turkeys the end of March in Nebraska and then the month of May here in NY.....

Our's starts March 15th here.Got some scouting to do,but they're mostly in the same spots I hunt year after year,so the scouting is mainly an excuse to be out in the woods.

Hard to get motivated with this much snow, but it will be here soon enough. With that said, after 20 plus years of hunting the spring birds, I can honestly say that if I never heard another hen call outside of the woods I wouldn't be disappointed.

BTW - I like the looks of that Acadian, wouldn't want to sell it would you?

I'm practicing on mine here at the office as we speak (nice benefit of working at home).

Possumtrot, I am using a W. Woodsman this year, I used them last year as well and shot my bird with them...the BH in the photo is a 125 gr. Snuffer..... they are even better for turkeys because of the wider cutting angle.

Varmit, I make a few wingbone calls each year... I really enjoy doing the scrimshaw work on them.

Formerbutcher, there has already been an excellent biuld-a-long done by Osagetree..... You can find his build-a-long on page 2 of "Home grown archery tackle spring turkey's 2007" in the Pow Wow forum..... My box is built almost the same way.....

BB, not for sale... I just got my Acadian woods last year and love it.... sorry.

At the risk of hijacking your thread, I can't help but be curious about the RH tab.  Am I mistaken?

Passthru - no it is a left handed tab...  I make all my own tabs too.. What may be throwing you off is the tab has a folded piece of leather for no pinch shooting. It's folded over and pulled through a small slot... for split finger shooting.

Great job! How are you doing the scrimshaw? I've had now luck with that! And the aged look to the wingbones,,, how? I like that look!

I love to use the scratch boxes,,, they really cut and purr well. Happened to have a pic in action of one, so I posted it here as mich-mtnman asked how you use one! EASY AS PIE!

I do almost all my scrimshaw work with an X-ato knife....

1.) Prep the bone by getting ALL the scratches out of the surface using #0000 steel wool. The surface must be as perfectly smooth as possible, as the ink when applied will  show up evey mark.

2.) Pencil draw on the bone what you want to scrimshaw.

3.) Trace the pencil with the X-acto knife, use a new blade, this will take a lot of pressure to scrimshaw the lines, be careful. Try and go over the whole thing once. Then go back and try and get good deep crisp lines.

4.) Take India Ink the good stuff, NOT water based ink. Spread it over the entire area you scrimshawed, let it dry for a few seconds, then steel wool the whole area lightly this will wipe off all the ink on the flat surfaces and leave the ink in the lines. You can go back and add details and repeat the process.... Give it a try, it's not that hard....

5.) Then For that aged look...I use Fiebings Leather Dye... Med. Brown... Just lightly apply... the more you use the darker it will be.... Get a good even coat... let it dry.... then buff it out for a nice shine....
