some woods might not be so forgiving of a quick dry.  I would work out my drying process with a split off a stave before working it to shape too much. something about 7/16 for its entire length? I notice clay did most of his reduction to thickness before drying, but left the width reduction until after it was dry.

Primitive? Not really. Crude in the sense of non refined, yes.  I see clamps, a form made from milled lumber and a makeshift oven with metal sides.

It's still cool to see and the level of skill is admirable :thumbsup:
