This morning was our first real snowfall of the year and a great day to be on stand.  Last Sunday afternoon I found a huge scrape so I set up a portable stand but saw nothing.  I wasn't able to hunt again until yesterday but with a bad wind had to sit a stand about 300 yards south west.  Saw 7 does and a spike but no shot opportunities.  This morning I woke to heavy snow and made my way into the scrape stand I've been dying to hunt.  It was perfectly quiet and snowing heavily.  So heavy, I had to keep wiping the build up off my limbs and arrow.  Before 8am two does ran past me I assumed being chased by a buck but nothing followed.  I sat down after about 20 minutes and heard walking behind me.  The buck was cruising down wind of the snow covered scrape and was going to pass by in range.

He was cruising though and as I was about to stop him with a grunt, he stopped on his own.  His vitals were covered as he put his head down and sniffed at the does tracks that had ran by earlier.  He turned and took up their trail.  No time to be cautious now so I swung my bow around to the other side of the tree and grunted to stop him as I drew.  The shot looked good.  Maybe a bit forward and as he spun the arrow shaft flew out.  I watched him run about 40 yards then stopped and looked like he was going to tip over.  I was sure he was going to crash right there but he didn't.  He walked slowly out of sight.

Something I always wanted to do was be able to take a deer with the bow in the snow. I have yet to accomplish this in all my year bowhunting.

A gave him a full 30 minutes then climbed down.  The blood was heavy and easy to see in the snow.  I was shocked to find a bed with no deer.  He had got up and walked another 30 yards to another bed but wasn't in it either.  I couldn't believe he had gone this far then I heard a crash.  He was 20 yards to my right, behind a tree.  He couldn't continue, I ended it quickly with a follow up shot.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki
