Bart Schleyer died September 14, 2004 on a solo moose at Reid Lake in the Yukon. It has been presumed his life was taken from us by a grizzly bear. The news was devastating to his family and friends, and the hunting community. In a small attempt to thank Bart for his lifetime of generosity and ease the pain we all felt, a memorial fund was started in his honor. The main goal of the fund was to supply educational support for Bart's young son Artyom who lived with his mother in Russia at the time. I encourage everyone who is of interest to do a search on Bart, and you will be inspired by his achievements in his bowhunting life and in wildlife conservation. You will find articles and thesis he has written, and those written about him. You may even locate the National Geographic's documentary he was featured in called "Tigers of the Snow."

The purpose of my writing today is to update all of those you contributed to Bart's memorial fund. The fund is no longer active, but it was highly successful. We collected individual donations as the result of promoting on this and other websites, the credits in our "Primal Dreams" film, a Bart's personal bow was auctioned through help of the PBS, significant portion of proceeds derived  from "Schleyer Commemorative" bow models made by Stalker Bows and South Cox, and many other sources.

So on behalf of Bart's sister Claudia Downey, who oversaw the memorial donations, she wants to thank all of you in the hunting community from the bottom of her heart, and let you know that your donations were greatly appreciated and used for the intended purpose. Bart's son Artyom did in fact get the opportunity to come to the United States, finish high school, learn English, and graduated from college with a degree in computer science. Artyom is currently employed and building on his career living in Colorado.

I am proud to be a part of and continue to be impressed by so many bowhunters who give back to others, and go well beyond our time in the forest. Thanks, Mike

That is so great to hear. Many times we don not learn of the results of such a great gesture.

I met his dad briefly on a couple of occasions  and he made an impression on me, and that went on to shape a hunting future for me I will never forget he was a rare breed.

I too have been gone the last few weeks and just saw this. Thanks for bringing up these words of encouragement from the hearts of contributing fellow bowhunters. Bart would be proud of all involved and especially of his son. Thanks again Mike. See you this weekend.  BW

I posted an article in the free reading journal section of my website. I wrote it for TBM and I included it as a chapter in my book as well.
