I recently acquired a 65 bear kodiak that draws 48 pounds at my draw length of 29 3/4 I call it a 30 inch draw once I expand before release. I like the idea of a heavy arrow plan to shot carbon and I'm thinking 400s with a 50 or 100 grain insert with complimentary broadheads to bring it up to about 200 at the tip. Eventually I would like to go wood but for now it's carbon all the way. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Also do I seem to be on the right track. Thanks all.

I've gotten full pass-throughs on deer with 45 lbs, 50 grain insert and 100 grain points. Since you're shooting 48 lbs I would go with at least 200 grains up front though, in case you encounter a rib bone or something.

Just find the combo that flies best for you and that bow that is a total weight of 480 +/- gr. Folks can get carried away with FOC weight and end up with arrows that get wonky out past 20 yards. With your draw length, you can probably get a good combo using 400 spine carbons, but you may need so much weight up front for good flight that you lose  significant velocity and your arrows drop more than you like out beyond 20 yards. You could also try 500 spine carbons cut to .e.g. 30.5. Are you using a dacron string or a padded 'fast flight' string?

I just tuned my Dryad Orion Acs Recurve, 400 spine 31 1/4 long with 250 up front shoot like darts. Same basic arrow I shoot out of my Centaur. Oh ya. 29" draw 48# on Dryad and 51# @ my draw length. Point weight has alot to do with spine as I'm now figuring out

Yes you are headed the right direction with 200 total up front don't hurry to cut your shafts because I've left them full length with 275 gr at 48# and achieved great results. Best wishes!

I'm shooting 48 @ 28 with a 200 vpa up front on 400s cut 30 3/4"  .  TD  Longbow from my shop (test bow) and shoot thru some deer but with near 100% 2 holes . The bow is cut a little past center which makes a ton of difference...

Also some wonky positions to shoot can keep from getting full draw....

Well from the replies it would seem I am at least heading in the right direction. I guess all I can do now is order some shafts and make some arrows up to see what will work best. Any further advice or tips are greatly appreciated because I'm kind of new to it all. Have a passion for it just not the knowledge. Kind of the story of my life😁

Also if anyone out there knows if a 65 kodiak is cut to or past center please let me know. Can not seem to find that answer either
