Does anyone hunt from a canoe? Do any of you have any tips on getting close to game with a canoe? thanks for the help.

There is a thread on here somewhere about exactly that. Ron LeClair has some real nice pics in it also.

In Bill Langer's dvd "Traditional Adventures II" there is some good footage of moose hunting in Maine using a canoe.  I've never done it, but it seemed to work pretty good for them.

Deer many times bed close to the river.
Drift with the current, paddle as little as possible using the paddle as a rudder. Keep an arrow on the bowstring and be ready.

An important thing to remember, keep your bow tip outside of the canoe when you shoot.   :archer:

The worst mmmmmmmmmiss I ever made was from a canoe. If you're gonna do it, practice sitting crosslegged for two hours in the rain then take a shot.........

Some times the canoe can put you where others can not get to.

Been talking about doing this for years.  Guess I'd better get on it and try.

I have hunted from a conoe and a kayak for waterfowl.

The kayak was fun but I have since upgraded to a old town discovery 169.

When your hunting in a conoe its like your part of the stream. Its something that is just special.

HaH! No outrigger but the freeboard was less than 2"

I was in a canoe with less than 2" of freeboard once ...but there was half a moose and all my gear in it with me.   :biglaugh:

I heard about a guy hunting in Maine who missed a moose from a canoe at 10 yards...by about 4 feet!

There is a movie - Lost Antlers - about a fellow Lance Goodwin going deep in the backcountry on a moose hunt in a canoe. One of the better trad hunt movies out there. Always gets me wanting to do a long float/hunt. A buddy of mine and I have talked about doing a late season float in Alabammy, but haven't gotten around to it quite yet. Maybe I can find a nice creek in TN and hit it in early October this year.

This is the movie link...

I've not hunted from a canoe but I have used one to reach my hunting area.  Its a nice way to access places where walking just doesn't cut it.  Bought a short kayak last summer, may do the same with it.

Ron,

I am absolutely certain its someone we know.   :goldtooth:

Biggie, I wasn't going to tell a soul, buddy!!!

Are we talking canoes, hunting deer and adventures in cold November waters?    ;)

Well, let's just say that one should never go canoeing with a novice who might grab a branch hanging over the shore to stop the canoe.   :scared:

ESPECIALLY if there's a couple of bows in the bottom of the canoe that might (did) get away.

P.S.-I've never bow hunted out of a canoe.   :wavey:
