I notice many of you do not use treestands for deer.  How do you set up a hunting spot?

dougers

you can just sit at the base of a big tree or some like to build a blind out of brush.  find a likely travel route and then find a spot to build a blind.  if there is enough cover, a stalk is always fun.

Don't mean to contradict, but during one outing this fall I sat up against the base of a tree and didn't move. Two does came in and proceeded to bust me. I'm thinking "a little more cover next time".
The older I get, the better I was.

A good setup nees good cover behind and in front of you. Break up your outline and give yourself as much margin for error as possible.

I like more brush behind me and some in front.  I wear Natur gear and it seems to disappear easily into whatever.

ha, yeah, you def need more cover, but in a pinch you gotta do what you can.  like vermonster and wudstix said, cover behind you is key.  there is nothing "natural" about the human blob silhouette.

Nope, that didn't work...

You can do a search for the word 'ground'....make sure you select 'topic only' ....and you will get a list of topics covering this subject.

I like to hunt from the ground most of the time. I've found that having good cover behind you is important in breaking up your outline. I also prefer to have some cover in front of me too. I also wear a ghilly suit to further break up my human outline. Also wearing a face mask and gloves are important too. Two of the most important things to remember is your scent and your movement. Deer are programed to pick up movement. ANd we all know about their smelling ability.

It ain't to hard to pick out a human outline against a tree.  I like to set up with brush behind me and cut a few branches and stick'em in the ground in front of me.  Oh yeah, a guillie suit don't hurt either

My preference is to have thick brush in front of me (small cedars are wonderful) and either large trees or additional brush behind.  I usually try to place myself so that they will go behind a tree or brush just prior to coming into my shooting lane so that I can draw unobserved.  I also like to have the brush cover me until the deer is at least broadside or quartering away.

I guess just refer to my posts on the links Terry put up. That will cover what I would say now. Pic of my set up on the 4th link

Thanks guys.  I've never attempted deer hunting from the ground - only from tree stands.  I've burned myself out in treestands and want to refresh my hunting experience (sounds deep don't it).  Terry, I get the message - search first.  Sorry bout that.

VMonster......I tried to link the page to the search that created the list.....but it just threw me back to the main forum home.

1st time I've tried that.   :biglaugh:

I was just teasing Terry. You were more ambitious than me, I just tell guys to use the forum search. LOL
