Where can I buy 1/8 in thick pieces of different woods for handle lams? Also in the handle area can you use soft wood lams or should they all be hard woods?

I use 1/8" stock for all sorts of musical instruments.  You can find that sort of stuff all over Ebay -- search on 1/8 lumber and by species.  My regular source for many sizes, thicknesses and species is Woodchuck's Wood:
