what #age and arrow weight = pass through

I was readng a post about whether it is better to get a complete passthrough or just good penetration.  So....my question is; what poundage (given good shot placement) and total arrow weight are you guys using that get a passthrough?  Also, does a two blade broadhead help vs. three or four blade?...Charlie

It all depends on the criiter you are shooting, but 8gpp. out of a bow of modern design and a sharp broadhead will go thru most whitetail out of 40# bows and up. This question really has no answer. Most will tell ya 9-11 grains per pound is ideal on most North american game animals as long as the #age is legal to hunt with! Shawn

35#'s of KE will pass though a deer easily and with good shot placement, and a little luck, an elk too for that matter.....Do the math on your arrow weight and speed.

KE= Mass X Velocity squared, divideded by 450240 anything over 50 #'s KE you are mesuring how far the arrow goes into the dirt.

A 427 grain arrow with 78#'s of KE will break ribs going in and out of a roosevelt elk at 60 yards.....done it myself twice....

Read Dr Ashby's work on arrow penetration to give yourself the most margin of error. In general, the heaviest arrow that allows reasonable flight at the range you shoot with a very sharp well designed broad head. Momentum is a better measure of what the arrow will do once it gets there.

My wife shoots a DAS bow. Last year she was shooting 46#@26". She shoots Beman MFX shafts, 27", with 100 grain brass adapters and 100 grain four blade Phantom bhs for a total arrow weight of 500 grains. She shot the four blade Phantom completely thru a mature black bear her first season which traveled only 25 yards. Last season we dropped the weight down to 43# and she shot a four pointer and got holes on both sides of the deer using the same arrows. Hope this info helps.

Sounds like your wife is tougher than me.  With my bad shoulder 45# - 50# is my max draw weight.  I too have a short draw length about 26in.  I just want to make sure I get a clean kill once the opportunity presents itself.  Right now I have a 125 grain Muzzy three blade punch through on my arrows.  It was good enough to accidentally put a hole through  1/8 inch steel siding, so I figured it would do a number on a deer.  One guy told me to switch to cut on contact blades for better penetration. I'm open to any ideas.  Also, are wood arrows generally heavier?  Please keep in mind, I've only been doing this two years and really don't know a lot of people around hre into trad hunting.  There is still a lot of the learning curve ahead of me yet.....

You will normaly get better penetration with a sharp cut on contact head, then with a punchcutter type head.

I really like it when folks talk KE in arrows and trad archery(what ever floatd that persons boat). If the set up is well tuned it pretty much is like Grey Buffalo said. What poundage will that be. I know of some with 30# bows with my verious readings. but tuning is the biggest factor to your answer.

Charlie, I would stick with the carbon arrows for light draw weight bows. They recover quicker (stop ocilating) in flight and penetrate better because of it. You can weight them up by adding inserts or a heavier point - may have to use a stiffer spine shaft if you add much up front. A long and narrow 2 blade like Grizzly or Stos will give maximum penetration and any cut on contact will give more than a punch through point. Clean well tuned arrow flight makes a big differnce too, so get em flying right.

I was fortunate with my 54 lb. Kota recurve using a CX Heritage at 500 grains with a Magnus two blade BH. It went between the ribs verticaly, double lung pass through, at 15 yards. I was suprised! Not a technical answer but my experience!

I was getting passthroughs on whitetails back in the early 70's with a 50# Browning Nomad and Foregwood arrows tipped with Bear Razorheads. I never shot over 20 yds.

My buddy Mike this year got complete passthru at 20 yds with his 57# longbow, Chundoo arrow and a Wensel woodsman. I like 8 grains per pound, sharp heads and good arrow flight. Poor arrow flight will result in minimal penetration.

My arrows are 9 grains per inch at 27 inches.  My draw weight is 40#, but I'll increase that soon (new bow).  I'm comfortable between 45-50lbs . Also I use 125 grain broadheads.  You guys think that'll work?....Charlie
