Question for the brain trust. Getting ready to shape the handle now that everything is glued up. Not doing a cut in shelf and not wanting to wrap with leather, I'm hitting a small snafu. I am going to use antler for the shelf and I don't want a big glue line due to it being contoured. Has anyone used brass pins epoxied into the antler and handle? It would be strong enough and as long as I don't get glue crazy there should be zero glue line along the edge of the antler. I'm also open to other suggestions for the shelf to.

To answer carver's question I'd probably pick the one on the right.

Dave, those are both real nice looking Bows. If it was me, I would pick the one on the right also.

Roy from Pa

I build the shelf out of stiff leather glued together.

Pat B

Heavy leather like Roy uses can be wet and molded to fit the contours of your handle area. I've used TBIII for this then sealed the leather with super glue after the TBIII dries. Pre-shape the leather before glue up.

I agree with Roy n Pat, and antler seemed to be noisy the one bow I had with it. As for Dave's bows......... I'd have a hard time accepting either one. Much too nice for a bum like me.

That's impressive

Yup antler rest will sound like a 22 rifle crack when ya shoot.

Bvas

Dave both bows look great. If it was me, I'd choose the straight limbed bow. Mostly because that's not something I would build myself.

Yew. I'll alway choose yew.

Yeah I think I would go with the yew too.  It matches well with the boo.
I'm sure they both shoot great though.

David, when you say the bamboo is carbonized, do you mean it is scorched black?
Bows look great.

Somehow I fell off the notify list for this thread and had to catch up from page 23! Now I have to actually wait for y'all to post. It's been entertaining as heck!

Bue, after I plane the belly lam, I burn the rind with a propane torch until it's black. The waxy layer will be completely charred. This causes the bamboo to cup towards the rind. The inside will be convex, so I plane it again to get it flat. I taper it with the jointer and refine the taper with the belt sander.

David thanks, forgot to ask what glue do you use for the bamboo lams?

TradBowyer

well her she is. just needs inked up and she's ready to go home. in case you are wondering why the limbs look a little wonky I used red elm cores and trapped the back. I'll post more pics tomorrow [attachment=1,msg2868897]

That looks really nice Tim! Those limbs are svelte and the riser looks like a Polynesian totem.
