New Handy Clicker--an alternative to limb-mounted clickers

I want to let TradGang members know about the Handy Clicker.

Like thousand of others, I have suffered from target panic. Limb-mounted clickers and psycho-triggers, like feather to nose, help to solve the problem, but I got frustrated with their many drawbacks. I wanted an alternative for myself and the hundreds of folks who I hear from who are ready to give up archery and bowhunting because of target panic.

The Handy Clicker is a new, hand-held shooting aide that I developed to help cure target panic and establish a highly controlled shot activation system that involves physical and auditory cues. It's super easy to use and unlike other systems, such as bow-mounted clickers, the Handy Clicker travels with you and not on your bow, enabling you to accurately shoot any bow and arrow combination that you pick up. Yes, it functions much like a grip seer or limb-mounted clicker.

Garlan, I don't want to give you bad information. I will look up the rules for each of the classes and let you know if/where it's legal in competition.

My focus has been on using it as a training aide and in hunting. I'm sure it will work equally well in competition, where legal.

How exactly does this work? Not the psychological aspect but more of the physical requirements of the shooter and how it's used. I'm familiar with the string clicker as I have one on every bow I own. This seems completely different.

It looks like you come to full expansion then squeeze it until it clicks. Closer to function to a grip sear.

These are all great questions.

The leather sleeve contains a spring steel clicker. To activate your shot, you come to full draw, solidly anchor, then depress the tab of the clicker hidden inside the leather until it clicks. It takes some pressure and is somewhat analogous to squeezing the trigger on a rifle. This forces you to focus on the motion of squeezing and the audible click provides psychological reinforcement.

It works a lot like a grip seer, but is much easier to use and doesn't require you to modify your bow.

My Youtube channel has a video of me shooting with a Handy Clicker. You can see the clicker in my bow hand and barely hear it right as I release the string.

In my bow hand, I operate the clicker with the tip of my middle finger. In my string hand, the clicker lays over the base of my little finger and I operate it with my thumb.

I'm working on some better videos to demonstrate how the Handy Clicker can be used...

I have a couple of friends who need to use such devices to avoid TP.  One has his mounted to his bow, the other is a device he holds in his mouth and bites down on.

Both were ruled against when they wanted to use them in competition in MN years back.

I'll be the odd man out here! I can't see where this device would cure TP but  only curtail the TP problem for a short while!  Seems to me in a very short while you'd just manually making it click before the desired time. Maybe I'm not understanding it completely. But if it works for you awesome.

I thought the same thing, but I'm not too smart either.  If your brain is telling you to "click it", how is it different than your brain telling you to release the string?  If it helps someone, then that's awesome!

The purpose of the device is to stay completly imersed in the form of your shot. If you're the kind of guy that snap shoots you will get little from controlled process shooting. You have to settle in at full draw. Then you start putting on back tension and never stop pulling. When you hear the click you release. A person who has never tried does not understand how powerful it is.

I apologize for my absence. I was traveling in remote parts of PA with little connectivity.

Alvey and Stagetek, thanks for your orders. Your Handy Clickers are on the way...perhaps you even have them already.

Bigdadjon has it right. It's about finding a shooting blueprint and sticking with it right through the click. The blueprint is sometimes referred to as controlled process or closed loop shooting.

It typically takes 6-24 months for any activity (shooting a bow) to become completely subconscious or automatic. This is why new shooters are often excellent shots right out of the gate. Nothing is automatic so their brains are allowing them to think through and act upon every step of the shot without confusion.

Target panic creeps in when the brain subconsciously and uncontrollably anticipates the next step, which is often acquisition of a certain sight picture. This sight picture/release relationship compels you to shoot before you have reached anchor; or forces you to hold off target and then swing on for an erratic release.

The Handy Clicker breaks the connections among the stage of your draw cycle, your sight picture, and your urge to release. It takes away the automatic movement and compels you to follow a controlled, step-by-step process. It moves the shooting process to become deliberate and physical instead of subconscious and automatic.

It's somewhat like squeezing the trigger of a rifle.

It's far easier than you might think, because introducing something new to your shot resets the entire sequence, as if you were a newbie again.

That said, it certainly takes effort and mental grit. You have to stay focused and in your shot cycle. Saying something to yourself (a mantra) can be helpful. So for example, you lock into your draw, maintain back tension and say "keep squeezing, keep squeezing," until the click goes off.

For most shooters, I think it will take 50-100 shots to get used to the Handy Clicker—that is getting it adjusted and deciding where it works best, bow hand or string hand. Then it will take another 50-100 shots before you start seeing marked improvement in accuracy. Once it all falls together, you'll see a giant leap in your accuracy.
