Hey guys getting ready to attempt my first 3pc take-down.

I'm going to build a hybrid. Riser will start out as an 1-1/2 riser block. Goal is to get limb pads down to 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 range. I really wanna cut shelf 1/8" past center so I'm thinking I need to reinforce riser.

A: how does one hide a g10 I-beam? If you place it off center dosent it make it harder to tap the riser? (Because you'd be half taping the g10)

B: would it be just easier to run phenolic through the riser like they do in Black Widows up and down? Would it be strong enough?

Other ideas?? Open to all suggestions

Thanks as always!

Go ahead and center it up. Just keep it wide enough to go past center. Two layers of glass on the front of the riser will help also. And use a good wood to start with.

You might check how crittergetter Primal Tech bows does his. He makes the riser wider at that area.

And no I wouldn't wanna drill half on the g10 either. You know where that bit will want to go!

I use 1/8" g10 for the i-beam and lay it up off center far enough on the shelf side to avoid drilling into it when I install the inserts. I put 1/16 g10 overlay on the back of the riser to hide the ibeam and adds more strength.  I also do the glue up in multiple steps so that the belly side of the riser hides the ibeam as well.  It does take some carful planning so that you don't grind into and expose the ibeam when shaping the shelf and grip. I used to start with a 1 3/4" block and leave it thicker on the shelf side but I've recently started just making them 1.5" because the I beam is really what your relying on.
Hope this helps

Gonna need to do some planning  :notworthy:

I actually intentionally line up my G10 I beam so that the threads of the insert tap into the G10 to give the best bite possible. On softer woods, like walnut, it makes me sleep better at night!
