I like the article and generally agree we carry too much. I do want to offer another take though and recommend that even day hunters always carry first line survival gear at all time. My daypack with some rations weighs 22 to 25 pounds depending on season and I carry it for hikes and tree stand hunts. I pack cordage, a stove, fire starting stuff, a military poncho, a military poncho liner, a trauma kit, and a steel water bottle (full) with cup. That seems excessive, heavy, and is tempting to leave in the truck but if your car catches on fire or you end up immobilized on the trail it is the same thing as not having it at all. At bare minimum the poncho and poncho liner is so life saving I suggest never leaving those as a bare minimum.

Perfect timing for this. I need to re evaluate my pack.
I use a Tenzing 6000,  over 20# ( pack alone is 7-8 #) and used mostly for day hunts 1-2 miles from camp.  Just about killed me the other day on a 2 mile hike.
Guessing I don't need 3 knives, saw etc etc.

Thanks everyone. What really got me was the laying all my gear out in front of me. I always find something extra to leave out. Especially when I travel to hunt. Day two's pack is always lighter than day one. Ha!
