So I made up my first dozen arrows with a new Bearpaw tool. Works very well for the point tapers, but it just won't accept the shaft for the nock taper. Same 11/32" fitting as for the points, of course, but the shaft's just too big for the nock end. Tried beveling down the end a bit, and even starting the taper on a plastic too, but it just doesn't go. With anu of the dozen Surewoods.

Anyone ever run into this?

I have had some really tight, put the 23/64th in and spin them. I always assumed it was the finish I applied, too thick. Had it happen wiith lacquer

Shaft fits the 11/32 fitting, just doesn't go into the taper though. I'll try the 23/84 and see if that helps. I seal with Tung Oil; don't think it coats heavy.

Zradix

Never had any kind of problem with mine.
Hope you can get it working for you.

Take out the fitting end and see if the shaft will go into the blade at all....don't try to taper em this way of course.
Maybe there's a little burr in there or something.
...maybe you just got a bad one.. :dunno:

Double check the end fitting slips over the whole shaft...might slip over the end(s) but not an inch or so up the shaft?

Tried all of the above, and there is a blade in. I'll call the vendor and see what they say.

Good luck bud.
I've had really good luck with mine.
I can't help but think you got a bad one.
Let us know what they say.

I do my tapers prior to putting finish on.  I think that finish does add to the diameter of the wood along with adding one more thing to dull the taper tools blades.

slowbowjoe

Good point Rifleman! Pun intended.

A friend had a similar problem with the Bearpaw taper tool and found that the blade was not extending far enough to cut the taper.  Not sure how he solved the problem, but he did something that fixed it without having to return the tool.  I think he may have called Bearpaw customer service.

Calling Bearpaw is my next step. Spoke with the shop I got it from today; he offered a refund as he had no replacements.

Talked to the lady at Kustom King (Kathy?), the Bearpaw distributor, today and she was helpful as can be. Terry from the Footed Shaft had already called her about it, and she said to just send it back and they'd get it replaced.
Nice to deal with some good folks.
