I finished a riser with Thunderbird gloss.  The riser was natural actionwood that I stained with min  wax walnut.  After 3 days I was putting on a handle wrap, tennis racket wrap.  When I lifted it back to reposition a little it blistered the finish down to bare wood.  What if anything did I do wrong?  Any Ideas on what might be the issue?  Could it be the oil based stain?  Just looking for some thoughts.

First off, sorry that sucks! Did it pull the stain out of the wood?  How long did you let the stain dry before finishing? I am guessing you did not use a sealer before the Finish.

Did not lift stain.  Let stain dry 2 days.  No sealer

You might think about doing a test piece with your materials, to see if it happens again. Or use a sealer before the epoxy finish, it's cheap insurance against bad bondage. I am surprised Bow Man has not opined on this.

I have never had a need for a sealer on a lacquer based finish. What base was your stain?
High on Archery.
