Broadheads for africa, any suggestions?

I currently have some grizzly bruins (200grains) and VPA (3 blade 175grains) are these tough enough for plains game? planning on building a 550 to 650 grain arrow. Or do you guys recommend other heads. thank you, god Bless

I'll bet my bottom dollar either of those will work just fine as long as the setup is well tuned and the arrow is put in the right place.

I have made 4 trips over there. I have only used German Kinetic heads. I have taken lots of critters that range in size from as small as a steenbok to as large as a blue wildebeest or greater kudu bull. All with a Sarrels Blueridge longbow that is 50# at my DL and a total arrow weight of about 11.3gpp.

Good luck! You will be planning your second trip to Africa before you get home from this trip!!!!!

Based on nothing other than pictures and stories and assuming most animals are larger than a whitetail, I'd go with Grizzlies, the 185 glue-ons, and steel adapters if I was getting on a plane today. The 185s the thickest steel. Penetration is about twice as much as needed for a whitetail!

With the weight of your arrow I'm assuming your shooting mid #50s or better?
If so 3blade VPA will put better blood on the ground, and yes, they are tough enough

ive never been to africa but for plains game i would venture to say anything you would use for elk should suffice. For the most part i would feel confident in just about any broadhead out of my heavyweight broadhead showdown.

Out of the assortment i have on hand i would go with the 300 grain tuffhead screw in, second would probably be the 190 cutthroat with steel adapter followed by the grizzly 185, tuffhead 200and kodiak 225 in that order

I will be hunting in Namibia next week myself.  Kudu and eland are at the top of my shopping list.  Any setup that will perform well with elk should work equally fine with African plains game.  If eland is on your shopping list, just remember that they are nearly the same size as a mature bull moose.

Have not shot an eland.  I shot a gemsbok on my last trip with a complete pass through.  I am shooting a 57# A&H Archery ACS longbow with heavy carbon arrows (about 650 gr) and Abowyer Wapiti single bevel heads.  I have no concerns with getting adequate penetration with this set up provided I put the arrow where it needs to be.

I shot and bow killed with trad gear 5 elands 2 big bulls 1 young bull and 2 cow.
Closest shot was 17 yards and longest past 35 yards. I got pass through shot only on 2 : a big bull on a quartering shot with a very wide 3 blade and a young bull with the same BH. I was shooting quite heavy bow fast (61# Border bow and 66# RER Recurve) @ 31"+ DL and heavy arrow (670 gr on the big bull and 800gr on the young). It is in real world a lot of bow regarding to the Ke/ momentum those set up were giving.
  On a close range broadside animal you can kill it with medium bow poundage. although eland rib on a big bull goes up to 1/2" in thickness. Most of renowned BH from zwickey to the high priced BH will work giving an equally dead eland. But with those same medium poundage bows a quartering shot angle can lead to poor penetration if you hit a rib. In that case 2 blades , extreme sharpness combine to high edge retention of the high end pricey BH may give some more little help.
I also trad bow killed a fair bunch of blue wildebeest, gemsbok (with several very big specimen in each class) and most of other southern African plain ongulates.
In fact the brand/design/number of bevels of the broadhead is really not correlated to the results

Thanks HH, your real world advice has always been very helpful. I will be shooting #60 and VPA 3 blades on all else, but planned on using a 2 blade on the eland.

I will be going to Namibia in just a little over a month.  I have been shooting Zwikee's for probably 35 - 40 years and plan to take them along for this hunt as well.  However, I am also going to try the Rocky Mountain Cut Throat single bevel 200 grain heads as well.  The really fly nice from my bow and actually look a little tougher than the Zwikee heads. 
I am shooting 650 grain carbons from a 70 lb recurve.

Getting excited and will probably start packing in a couple weeks.  Rocky Mountain Specially Gear in Denver, said that they would put a "scary" sharpness on the Cut Throat heads for me.  The Zwikee's I sharpen myself.

That id the alien archery predator xtg single bevel. Its 310 grains, 1.5" cut with .080" thick blade. I havent shot enything with them yet besides some plywood for "scientific purposes" but i know a few guys in Australia have taken some big bush bulls and water buffalo with them but that was with compounds. The blade angle is my main concern with them for a trad setup

I'd go with a Grizzly head for Africa built to 25% or so FOC and a well tuned shaft.
