I am aware that with longbows etc, less is more when doing tips and overlays relating to arrow speed etc Recently been wondering about recurves. I always do an overlay at the curve as I don't like cutting string grooves into the glass. My thoughts are the overlays would stiffen the curve acting a little more like a static tip and adding impetus to the cast. Think siyahs or the like, and seemingly giving a little 'mechanical ' advantage, albiet at the cost of more mass at the tips.

Bob, I would think you would have to add a thick overlay to stiffen it much, and IMO, would be a trade off weight/stiffer . Bet not much diff.

Build a couple test bows.  :D

Well that was a lot of help...  :)

And that is your opinion?  :p

Maybe you could do your next build without the overlay and do some testing, then add the overlay and run the tests again?

FWIW, I did testing of tip weights on an ASL and found the loss in FPS to be much less than expected.  In fact, it seemed that the difference in addition of tip overlays alone would be unnoticeable.

Crooked Stic

That is why the ACS tip came about. Curved across the width = stiffer without the weight' Thinking the idea of stiffer tip not only better string angle but loaded quicker on the bottom end that added perfromance. Any amount of mass weight will take longer to recover. But you might need a chrono to see it.   :bigsmyl:

If memory serves, adding 27 grains to the ASL tips resulted in speed variations within the shot to shot variations of a fingers draw.

What's an ACS tip

thanks fellas, more or less confirmed my thoughts on the issue. I will continue to use the overlays as I much prefer to cut the string groove in them than cutting into glass alone.
