Size of timber for three piece riser?

Hi all,

I'm having a bow made for me out of some hard to find wood (Leadwood), and I've said to the bowyer I would help to source some. What sort of dimensions would I be looking at for the timber blank? I guess I'd need a bit extra for the limb wedges (think thats the name).

If anyone has a source for Leadwood (Combretum imberbe) I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Any advice appreciated!

Mark has a good idea. If you have to guess, Id guess 3 x 6 x 24 would be a nice start.

BTw if you're just looking for really dense wood, I've measured black Ipe at ~1.25SG, and king wood at about 1.1SG IIRC.

I've got quite a bit of it from a hardwood supplier near me....but i'm in England! I could get you a riser block and send it to you if you get stuck.
It is a truly beautiful wood when you get a nice piece. I have got some figured pieces and once it's lacquered it is just superb

It also sands quite easily for a super dense wood.
To my knowledge it isn't being cut commercially anymore as it is endangered.

Ben thanks for the info, appreciate it. I have been considering Macassar Ebony as an alternative as it is supposed to be very dense as well.
