Hello my name is mike duddy I am new to this forum.  I make my own bows and arrows out of wood.
I am interested in new designs and materials. I have made my arrows out of cedar and pine and my bows out of red oak.  I am always interested in trying new materials.

Welcome aboard, Mike. We're practically neighbors. I live a few minutes north of Butler. There's a lot of knowledge here to draw from. I hope to have some bowmaking gatherings after hunting season, maybe you can stop over.

I am also nuts about fly fishing, I build my own fly rods out of wood and also the reels.  If you can make a bow from  wood you can make a rod from the same type of wood. I operate a hydraulic repair shop on rt.19 so stop by sometime.

Welcome Mike!  I'd gladly trade some bow building advice for fly rod building advice if I lived about 700 miles closer.  That's very cool.
You're in good hands with that group of Pa. bowyers; they really know their stuff.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Good try at stirring the pot, Wayne.  I can't believe Roy isn't biting.
Retirement must have really mellowed him out.     :campfire:

Roy from Pa

Welcome, Mike

Get your hands on some Osage and make a bow from it. Osage is the best there is for bows.

I'm just an old guy trying to get into heaven..    :)

I can help you if you like.  what would you like to know about making a fly rod?  I make them from different woods like red oak , hickory, maple , and some poplar.  all have worked very well. I call it traditional fly fishing, and making REAL fly rods.

That's cool. I'd like to see them. All I've seen are bamboo flyrods. Ever use osage? Just wondering since it is premier bow wood... and flyrods and bows are both dynamic in use.

Bowjunkie

Got any pictures of your flyrods you can post here?

Mike, I don't have any specific questions or any plans to try to make one anytime soon.  Kinda knee deep in bows right now.  I just think it's cool to hear that you make them with those different woods.  I always assumed that you could only make a "traditional" one out of bamboo.
Like Jeff, I'd love to see pictures of one if you want to post them.  Hoping to retire in a few years and who knows, might try to build one then.  Maybe I'll even have the time to get out on the water and use it.    :)
Ask away if you have any wooden bow questions.  The Pa. bowyers love to answer them and it helps to keep them occupied and out of trouble.    ;)

I had some pictures ,but we got a new computer and I have to load them in . I  have to tell you guys that you can make arrows the same way that the rods are made. I have done this.  Even like using two different kinds of woods, or near hollow shafts , and cored shafts with balsa wood.  I am working on this, even shafts tapered on one end or both ends, what ever.

How do you post pictures? My screen doesn't have any place to do that.
