So the recent post of the feather backing got my wheels turning. Let's see or hear about all the different backings you guys have seen or done. Not just the norm.

Snake belly

I used it because I always see snake back backing but no belly skin

I did the belly scales a while back also.

Here is one I'm working on now.  Just glued it on last night.  Its not real snake skin.  It cost me just a little over a dollar for enough to back a bow.

I really like cherry bark.  Another very cool one that was posted recently was a grass carp skinned bow that John made.

It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

I do laced cable backing.  Functional and interesting.

This is cherry bark backing like above with the lichens and mosses left on. I just applied Tru-Oil over it.

This is a trade bow I received last year. It is a sturgeon backed ash.

With the fish backings you remove the scales.
I can't imagine removing the scales from a gar.
With the carp or grass carp removing the scales, with care leaves a better pattern.

What's the process for drying Carp skin??

John Scifres

I have only done one carp skin and it was frozen fresh, not dried.  I don't think drying would work.
