Sounds like I need to buy some hickory backing strips and smooth on and mess with this one later. On to plan C.

#3 is a hackberry stave from the same tree I was successful with last year. Maybe I can go 2 for 2 out of that tree.

Bow season starts here this Saturday. Wonder what my chances on hunting with a new bow are?

Put several hours in today, still have to steam the handle to line up the tips and planning on backing with rawhide for extra insurance. Got both limbs moving a few inches.

That looks pretty nice, sporthunter!  I've never worked hackberry.  Is it similar to hickory?

SportHunter

The wood is pure, easy working (feels natural) and has ~1/8" average rings. This wood was cut from about a 7-8" tree, mid forest, got 6 good staves out of it. Hickory is tougher to work. I need to get over there and cut some more before too many more homes go up.

Red and if you toast the belly it really gets snappy.

Got my pyramid bow tillered. Now to shape the handle and do some shooting in, recheck tiller, put some finishing touches on her and ship  :)

Im my mind. Tempering hackberry is the only way to make a hackberry bow. It takes massive set without tempering, even making it long and wide. Tempered hackberry makes a killer bow.

Guess I need to get some hackberry and try it out.

I know Ben's been crazy busy, but I did get to see and shoot his new bow.  So I'll post his full draw pic for him since I took it:

I have to say that I enjoyed shooting the bow and grouped quite well with it.  It complements that knife quite well in function and aesthetics.

Built a new caul and toasted the limbs today. Going to let it rehydrate then back it with rawhide.

I have that same heat gun! Oh and the bow is coming along nicely.
