A while back I posted a thread about a draw knife I made here in the blacksmith shop where I work. Since then I've been working on some spoke shaves. As you can tell, I like tinkering. I guess I like figuring out what makes it work. I forged the blade on this one and a fellow worker (Andy) shaped and fitted the blade to the handle. It works great. These are working tools and we demonstrate how by using them on wood working projects. We've actually made a couple and have more in the works.

The blade is forged from a file. This shows the stages.

Here is the blade after the heat treat which was done by quenching just the edge and drawing the hardness back wih a red hot bar of steel. I watched the colors run toward the cutting edge and stuck it in water to stop it.

Here is the spoke shave completed. The blade is friction fit.

Here, I'm testing it outside the blacksmith shop. I should have taken my wrist watch off.

That looks awesome.  (Nice shaving horse too!)  You are going on my list of people to bug when I can't figure out how to make broadheads this winter...

Lin Rhea

That means I have to figure them out first.   :D

I actually plan to make some so I'll post pics good or bad. Thanks.

Who's the old coot on the bow horse? I didn't know they had wrist watches back a hundred years ago..

Lin Rhea

Yep. That would be me. I let it slip my mind till right after the pic was taken.   :D

A step I missed in my traditional quest...

Make the tools that will make the bows!

Real nice hand made hand tools!!!

How do I order one?

I'm not taking orders on this tool. Sorry. I'm hoping to show that it can be done with a little effort and can be used for bow building. You just make it one step at a time. Thank you.
