"feathering in Phenolic"

Is there any tricks or tips to feathering in phenolic on riser overlays and tips!Some look like the are so thin they just flow into the glass.Thats not mine!LOL!Thanks, scott

I take some masking tape (2 or 3 layers) and place it up next to the phenolic on the glass. I then start off with a file and get is as close as I can or until i start making marks on the tape. I then remove tape and start with 200 grit sand paper. At this point I am sanding the phenolic and the glass at the same time but putting more pressure and emphasis on the phenolic. I keep going up in sandpaper grit till I got a perfect transition.

Be careful and check you glass often as you can create a "dip" in the glass where the 2 materials come together, because the phenolic is much tougher than glass.

Also if you have a vice to clamp the bow down it will be much easier. Clamp as close as you can to the area you are working on to avoid movement or flex of the bow.

Hope this helps and I am sure there are other and better ways...

I have the end of the limb tip over lay sanded to a knife edge before glue up.

I tell you, I hate doing that with phenolic... PITA! so I usually do a layer or two of glass, then a thin strip of phenolic on top of that.  Reason being, it is much easier to feather glass than phenolic into the limb glass.  Looks cleaner that way too.

You can get fiberglass to flow much better then phenolic.  Might want to try it next time.

Also as you get close only sand one direction (from top to bottom piece of overlay).

Like stated above presand it before glueing.  

Ditto on the glass feathering better.  And looks way neater
