I have my bow almost finished. How do I figure out what size string I need to order for it. I dont have the stuff to make one so Im gonna have to buy one. Also what is the best stuff to glue my tip overlays on with Thanks.

Pat B

Tell us about yout bow. What is it made of? In what style is it made?
Generally speaking you want your string for a longbow about 4" shorter than the N/N measurement down the back and about 3" shorter for a recurve...or is it the other way around?

Ive ben told on glass bows CA glue (AKA super glue),or smooth on for tips.lots of guys seem to be using ca glue.Ive used CA and Urac for wood bows. Some people use Tight Bond wood glue.It depends what your bow is made of i guess. For string length, measure your bow,I think its 3" shorter for long bow and 4" shorter for recurve.Scott

Its is hickory self bow. I want to use wood and antler on my limb tips. I didnt know if the wood glue would bond with the antler. I was thinkin about epoxy but I was gonna get some more opinons on it first.

scottm

Ive used CA glue on antler.Soak the antler on the back with super glue.Let it dry. rough it up a little and then ca glue to tips.Just make sure both the tips and antler are flat.Epoxy works also.Ive used the 5 min type.

ca glue for antler. I do it just like scottm
I'm drinking from a saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed

I've successfully used TB glue, super glue(thin and gel) and 5ton epoxy for antler tip overlays on wood bows.If you use super glue do as Scott said and soak the antler first to seal it.

I use Smooth-On for overlays.  Wait 24 hours to cure, but it's worth the wait.  When it comes time to blend  in the overlay, Smooth On out performs CA Glue in my book.

You've gotten plenty of info on overlay glue. As far as the string...
What I do is use an extra long one-loop Flemish string to tiller the bow. As I come to full brace it's easy to shorten the string with a bowyer's knot on the bottom bow tip. Once the bow is finished and the string is at full brace just measure the string and then order that finished length.
