I tried experimenting with appling snake skins on fiberglass limbs. I used black glass with copperhead skins and they turned out almost black. I'm guessing that the color of the glass greatly effects the finished color on the limb. Is this correct? and suggestions? Tony

Should I use white or brown glass under copperhead. Tony

Tony,  those copperhead skins are pretty thin and whatever color is underneath really comes through.  Light tan is one of the best colors underneath copperheads, so maple or bamboo under clear glass works really well.  I think copperheads over most brown glass would still come out fairly dark.  If you want to put copperheads over black glass or other dark colored limbs you can spray the limbs with a light coat of cream or tan spray paint before laying down the skins.  Pretty much any cheap rattle can paint will work, but get some with a flat finish and use just enough to get your color on the limb.

Thanks Clark and Chris, This is new for me and I appreciate all comments. Would maple or light colors be best on rattlers? Tony

Tony, rattler skins are thicker and their pattern shows up pretty well on any color limb, including black glass.

I waisted a pais of copper heads before I learned to spray painted a thin coat of tan on glass limbs before glueing. I waisted another set my useing white. White dos'nt look very good (natural).
Did'nt have internet then and no one to ask.

That's good info to have cause I've got a pair (3) actually that I'll be putting on a bow soon. It's too dang hot in the garage to build right now, but perfect for skinnin a couple bows.

FWIW- I put water mocassins over black glass and they turned out pretty awesome. Might look for some of those if you have a dark colored bow to skin and mocassins are suprisingly attractive on a bow I think.

This one has black glass underneath and the mocassins came from Snakewood TG member.
