Greetings all! I'm building my first flatbow using hickory and I had a piece of mahogany that I was going to use for the handle. I have read on an earlier post of this forum that mahogany is brittle so they wouldn't use it for a riser but wondering if that holds true for a flatbow design as well. Any input you have would be greatly appreciated.

It will work fine for a flat bow riser.

Thanks Pat!

I'm sure I'll be posting back with other questions during this project and when done I'll post some pictures.

Thanks again!

AH, so that's why my Mahogany riser blew apart on the tree? It looked like it was split with an ax.

I'm back with my next question. I have been considering putting a backing on the bow and I'm wondering what would be a good backing for a hickory board bow? My hope was to get a lamination from KennyM but not sure the best way to go for the wood combination to ensure durability. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Also, when gluing the lam on should I use URAC or is there something different that would be recommended?

Thanks again for all your advice.

Can anyone provide any feedback on my last question? I'm wanting to back the bow and not sure what would be a good backing for it. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

PEARL DRUMS

Hickory doesnt need any backing if the board is half suitable.

Pat B

Rawhide, linen, silk or brown grocery bag paper all will make good backings for your hickory bow but like Pearlie said generally hickory doesn't need a backing.

Got it. Thank you gentlemen! I took my time to watch some videos on how to choose the wood so I think I have good boards. So, with that then I guess I will leave it unbacked for this run.

Thanks again!
