Do I need to do anything to Cocobola before it is glued up in limbs? Tony

jsweka

I don't know.  Some guys say to wipe cocobolo with acetone prior to glue up to get rid of the oils.  Some guys say wiping with acetone only brings more oils to the surface.    :dunno:

I've never used it in the limbs, but I did use it for a longbow riser and I did wipe with acetone first.  The bow has held together after thousands of shots.

Sorry, I guess my response wasn't all that helpful.

I sometimes pre heat them for thirty min in my hot box before glue up if they are fresh ground.  If they have been around for a couple weeks or so and it's been warm and low humidity then I'll just glue em.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys, They've been in my house for a couple of months in the heat, I'll heat them in the heat box before glueup. Thanks Tony

I cleaned cocobolo lams on my recent build with denatured alcohol prior to gluing and have had absolutely no issues. Here is a picture during finishing and I have completed and shot it many times since and she is holding tight! This is my first build so take it for what it's worth. Good Luck!

I had used cocobolo for the first time on limbs last year. I had no issues with delaminating, but had a bunch with the oil bleeding out. I used white accent strips and the oil bled all over and could not get the stain out.
Also, use breathing filters. Some folks are allergic and can mess you up pretty bad.
