dying a bow

My daughter wants a blue riser on the bow I'm making her. How do I keep the dye on the riser from bleeding into the laminations from the limbs.

In Guitar making they use pinstripe automotive tape to cover the edge while they spray or wipe on a water/alcohol soluble dye. You might try something similar (although I've not tried it on a bow). That creates a fake binding edge of un-dyed wood around the edge...but sometimes it bleeds I think and needs to be sanded back just enough to remove the dye.

i asked the same question awhile back and most told me that it could be done but its very hard to do without it bleeding, but there were a few people that posted pics that had pulled it off.

they also said the glue line may keep it from bleeding over onto the other pieces of wood, but i was going to have to use the smallest paint brush (like a small craft brush)
