When using veneers(.030 or less) on the back of a 1 piece bow how do you join them? A scarf joint seems like it would be very hard to do in something that thin. Thanks, Bob

Bob is this under glass?
I think either way you could just butt them in the center, just make sure they were smooth. Then follow that up with a overlay on the back of the riser to hide the joint.

I use a scarf? joint and super glue, I used a butt joint once. I sometimes have trouble getting the scarf perfect.. but it is the stronger and best looking joint..KennyM has a picture or 2 on his build a long that shows his way of sanding the joint perfect.

Yes, Mac, under glass and I do use overlays. I guess I am conserned about the veneers sliding apart when the air pressure goes on. Robert, how do you grind a scarf on something so thin, do you use a backer board or something like that? I do scarfs on lots of lams pretty easy but that thin I think they would rip when I touched them to the disc sander.  Bob

I do veneers by hand with a sanding block and a board. Stack them together on the board and hit them with a few passes of the block. They are so thin it doesn't take much

just like PV, I use a sanding block with 220 paper and use my reading glasses...i dont get in a hurry, use very light pressure and only sand one direction.. from middle towards the end.

Easiest way is to buy the veneers long enough that you don't need to have a joint. Order from the peope that make the veneer material for cheap and you can look at hundreds of different woods on their site.. I can Email you a link.
