I'm making a white ash one piece self bow. Building it from a three inch sapling and need to back it. I would like to use hickory-any seg. would be app.

I'm doing the same, and I'm using either hickory or red elm.

Hickory may overpower white ash, maple would be a good choice, if your using hickory I would keep it thin.

You shouldn't need a backing on a stave bow unless you screwed up the back.
