First Limb Bolt Installation on Osage/Rosewood Riser

Well, I think I did rather well for my first time? This is an Osage/Rosewood riser that I made for an Osage take down longbow, or recurve, or both. It will start out as a longbow, but may eventually build some other limbs for it using the same riser. I know it's short, but that's what I intended for it to be. The idea started out to be a bow for my nephew for Christmas, but the project just wasn't moving along as quickly as I had hoped, so with 2 weeks till Christmas I tossed this project aside and knocked out a nice one piece Osage longbow for him.

This may still end up being for him, maybe a birthday present? But if it shoots good and seems short enough I may use it as my blind bow? I'll see how it turns out.

Here's a bit of the install. Since I don't have a big drill press or even a vise to use on the bed plate that was big enough, I had to do it the old fashioned way by using bar clamps, C clamps, blocks and shims. I managed to secure it and get it done.



Here's a pic of my little box template that I made so I could get both limbs pads the same.



I marked off each drill bit to the depth I needed and put masking tape around the bit so I would know where to stop.
Talk about doing things the hard way, but then I'm kinda used to that. Poor men have poor ways, and this is pretty much how it's always been for me. I probably wouldn't know what to do if I had the proper equipment to do a job?

that aint the right equipment fot the Job! Oh that is right if it was me I would have my cordless straped to something and a platfrom strapped to a small cylinger style jack. up to the cordless with a taped triger. But I like your way better.

Nice looking riser.  Very nice contrast.  How long is it and how long will the finished bow be?
I like your box for drilling the hole in the riser, never thought of that.  Of course I have never been accused of being real bright.

Jess, the box is just a template for marking where the holes need to be, then I take it off and drill them. Getting ready to work on the limbs next. The riser is only 10" long and finished bow will be in the 50's somewhere? Not exactly sure how long/short yet, but I left my limb blanks plenty long and will take them down to the overall length I want when I see how it's shaping up. I'm kinda wanting something shorter than my Grizzly, but I don't know if that's possible?

That picture of the drill press and blocks of wood brought back memories-lol. Nice looking riser. I like the TD hardware too-where did you get it?

Thanks, it's still rough yet but I'm just getting it all mocked up right now so I can start laying out the limbs. I got the hardware from a non Trad gang sponsor so I better not mention it here.   :rolleyes:
