Being real new to this I have a question about risers.  Basically how wide, how tall, and how long should a riser bland be?  Now I do understand that it depends on longbow, recurve and or 3 piece take down.  Just a rule of thumb not fixed in stone type dimensions.  Just trying to get started and need any help I can get.  Thanks!

I use for a 3pc takedown long bow  16" long 1.5" thick and 3.25" deep.

I build take down recurves.. 60" recurve I use a 20" riser x 1.75" thick about 4" wide to start.

52" one piece recurve I use a 16" riser x 1.50" thick about 3.5" wide to start.

Straight traditional longbows only here...   my riser may vary in length from 15" to 18", depending on bow length and draw weight.  They are all 1 1/2" wide, to match the glass and form.   When I used to make standard risers, they were 1 1/2 x 1 1/2.   Since I've gone to the overpass style riser, they are 1 1/2 x 2, which lets me use the same blank for either a standard riser longbow or my deep forward riser longbow.   For pix see:  "Forward Scout", "Bamboo Beauty" and "Bamboozler" on my site:

www.dickwightman.com    in the "Gallery"

These bows have very different risers, but were all made from the same blank.    This is also the blank I'm using on the TG Swap Bow thread.

For a TD Recurve I start with a piece about 20" long by 2" thick and 4" wide and work it down to where I want it.

I guess it would depend on what you want your final dimensions to be. I would always start a little larger.

one piece long bow 1 1/12 X 1 1/2 X 18", if building a compact bow you can shorten to scale.
