Cherry/Maple Recurve Complete

Last night I was able to put the final touches on the bow and this afternoon the string twisted for the final step in completing this project. This bow is for my friend's son who shoots 3D in the summer season with us. He has a compound but borrows an older bow from us as he would rather shoot classical archery.
As a young college student taking classes at Hocking College in environmental and outdoors studies he is pinching every penny. Yet, he was really wanting a bow, bad. Our agreement was if he purchased the lams I would supply the riser and glue for it. When he had a free weekend he helped in the preperation and glue up of the bow blank. On another occassion we cut out and glued on the overlays.

The last time he was here we spent a number of hours in the garage/shop filing, shaping and conturing the riser and tips. We were almost done but still had a few hours left.

I got motivated while he is away and completed the final shaping and sanding a few weeks ago. Thinking that a Boild Linseed Oil finish would look good I applied it. The wood really POPPED but it was a headache on the FG. After 4 coats on the wood it was then topped off with 3 coats of Helman's Spar Urethaine.
The riser is made up of aged Black Cherry at least 25 years old (LOVE THAT PATINA)and Hard Maple. The wood lams are Red Elm from Kenny McKinzie.

The overlays on the riser is cherry and maple with the tip overlays made up of whitetail antler.

As the picture shows it specs out at 55# @ 29" of draw which is this tall young man's lenght of pull.

I will be having a tough time presenting this arrow launcher to him as it is exactly what I plan on building for myself when the time comes. But for now I have to work with my son to build him a new bow. Hopefully they will be completed by the time 3D season rolls around.
